Very simply put, Google AdWords is another form of Internet Advertising.

What you say; "Bah Humbug, Another Advertising Scheme"

Well you must be careful here, Google gets  more then 70% search queries on their search engines compared to others. This makes them very formidable when it comes to Internet Advertising. AdWords is a Google based advertising tool that allows any individual, company or corporation to market their products (via websites) to potentially millions of buyers in the world using Google Adwords. All the ads you see after performing a Google search are actual Google AdWord ads.

All about Google AdWords

When a user enters a search or query on their web browser (via Google search); the screen displays all the top listed companies on the left hand side of the page (Organic Search Results). These sites are chosen based on their relevance to the search phrase and/or Website popularity called  PageRanking. PageRanking is a special formula (algorithm) that is used to give a Site a number between 1 to 10, where 10 is the best ranking. The higher the ranking the further up the totem pole you are the more you are displayed on the first page of the search query. The sponsored links that are displayed on the right and the top of a search result screen are paid listings, these are the AdWords ads. You want to get your site to show in the organic Search Result, cause it costs you nothing.

On that same page you will notice Ads on the right hand side and in some cases even the top of the page. These will be listed under Sponsored Links. These are called AdWords. These Sponsored Link companies will pay Google only if a user clicks on these links. This form of payment is called PPC (Pay Per Click).

Through Google AdWords. In brief, a company signs up with Google AdWords, makes a selection of Keywords (potential words that a user will enter on the Google search bar), these Keywords will trigger Company created Ad to display. While the company or individual is setting up the AdWords Campaign, he chooses the value he will pay (called CPC - Cost Per Click) Google when a user clicks on their Ad.  If no one clicks on the ad, no charges are incurred. Costs are only accrued when and only when a search user clicks on your ad.
